Only Jesus (Joshua) can bring Israel and us into rest—the rest from works in which we stop trying to earn God’s favor through our works.
Therefore, what we see is a divine pattern:
- Jesus died on the cross (the Passover Lamb) to free us from the bondage of sin (Israel was freed from slavery in Egypt).
- God guides us into knowing and trusting Him (manna and water in the wilderness).
- Through His law, the Torah, we come to know God more deeply (what pleases or grieves His heart).
- Through Jesus, we live according to the law of Grace, in which we are justified before the Father.
This is rest from works.
Hebrews 4:10
For anyone who has entered His rest has also rested from their works, just as God did from His.
