The Lord Is Near to the Brokenhearted

In response, we worked through the entire night to compile the data, proving that every transaction could be traced and every cent accounted for, down to two decimal places. We submitted this data directly to the accuser so that he and his team could examine and verify it themselves. And now, we wait—in silence and stillness with God.

During this season of waiting, we grieve, we feel angry, and we wonder, “How could anyone do this to honest people?” Yet God comforts us with every breath. In one moment of deep sorrow, I prayed, “God, please give us comfort—any comfort at all.” Amazingly, in less than an hour, good news arrived. God truly is near to the brokenhearted.

Consider the moment when the archangel Gabriel visited Zechariah. The angel brought beautiful news from God: their long-standing prayer for a child had finally been answered. But instead of lifting up praise, Zechariah doubted the messenger and asked for a sign. He did receive a sign, but with a piercing decree—he was made mute until the day his child was born.

God does not discipline us carelessly; Zechariah’s silence had a very profound purpose. Rather than allowing Zechariah to spread his doubt and anxiety to those around him, God forced him into silence and reflection. Watching his wife’s belly grow with new life week after week must have brought absolute assurance that a miracle was taking place in their lives.

Sometimes God allows us to go through difficult seasons filled with enforced silence—like Zechariah’s muteness—not to punish us, but to make us wait quietly and watch His miraculous work unfold right before our eyes.

So, for anyone who is brokenhearted today: let us come into God’s presence and pray that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
