God’s wisdom is not merely about knowing more about the Bible.
God’s wisdom changes the way we live.
“Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path.”
— Proverbs 2:9
There are three beautiful words here.
Tsedeq — Living in a Right Relationship
A child may still be called a child, but when the child continually rejects the father’s words, something is not right in their relationship.
The same is true of us.
We cannot repair our relationship with our Father in Heaven by ourselves. Sin has separated humanity from Him. That is why Jesus came.
On the cross, He bore our sin and reconciled us to the Father.
So tsedeq does not begin with, “I have lived well enough.”
It begins with the confession:
“I can stand righteous before God because of what Jesus has done for me.”
Mishpat — Acting Justly toward Others
When we begin to know God’s heart, His wisdom teaches us to see other people rightly: not twisting circumstances for our own benefit, not showing partiality, and not using others for our own advantage.
Mesharim — Uprightness of Heart
It is not only that our visible actions are right; our hearts are not crooked either.
A person can speak very spiritually, do many things that appear good, and even look very holy before others...
but God sees what is hidden in the heart.
That is why Jesus was so severe toward hypocrisy.
God does not merely want to correct what we do.
He wants to straighten who we are within.
Wisdom that Finally Becomes a Guardian
When a child is still small, the father holds the child’s hand.
He keeps the child from running into the street, touching something dangerous, or going away with the wrong person.
But the child will not remain small forever.
As the child grows, the father’s words begin to live within.
One day the father no longer needs to stand beside the child and say:
“Do not go there.”
The child already knows:
“Father once taught me that path is dangerous.”
This is one of the beauties of God’s wisdom.
At first, God guards our steps.
But as His words increasingly dwell in our hearts, the wisdom He gives begins to guard us from within.
“Discretion will watch over you, and understanding will guard you.”
— Proverbs 2:11
Wisdom guards us from misleading words.
Wisdom guards us from relationships that carry us away from God.
Wisdom even guards us from the desires of our own hearts that can drag us down the wrong path.
Not because we become people who can never be wrong.
But because we increasingly recognize the voice of our Father.
A Question for Today
Perhaps this is a good question for us to carry this morning:
Am I only asking God to guard my life, or am I also earnestly seeking His wisdom so that I may learn to walk with Him?
The purpose of wisdom is not merely that we know which path is right.
Its purpose is that we increasingly know God, trust Him, and joyfully choose to walk in His way.
Today, in the midst of work, busyness, decisions, and the many voices competing for our attention...
remember:
Keep listening to His words.
Keep seeking His wisdom.
Keep knowing His heart.
For the more we know our Father, the more we understand His way.
And the more we understand His way,
the more His wisdom guards our steps.
