The Human Being, Dust from the Ground
A skeptical scientific perspective sometimes mocks this verse because, biologically and chemically, the components that form the human body are far more complex than mere specks of dust. But do you know the structure of the original Hebrew text?
The original text does not use the preposition “from.” A more precise literal translation is:
“The LORD God formed the man, [namely] dust from the ground...”
Through this sentence construction, God is not actually speaking about the chemical formula of the human body. God is declaring the status and essence of our existence. Before the grandeur of the universe, human beings in themselves are only fragile, mortal, and insignificant—like dust that disappears as soon as the wind blows. Without God, our lives have no intrinsic eternal value.
Neshama and Nefesh Chayah
The turning point comes when God breathes Neshama—His own breath of life—into the nostrils of the human being. Only after we receive the Spirit of God who gives life does our status change completely: we become Nefesh Chayah, a living being.
God’s family, there is a radical truth here: life without purpose is not truly life; it is merely the process of waiting to die.
Not Merely Existing
The same is true spiritually. A life that does not remain attached to the Source of Breath, and a life that does not carry out the task or purpose He has appointed, is essentially the same as a dead life. We may move, breathe biologically, and stay busy with work, yet in the eyes of eternity, we remain a meaningless lump of dust.
Living in God’s Purpose
Today, let us reflect. Have we found and begun living out the purpose God has given our lives?
Let us commit not merely to “exist” in this world. Become a being who is truly alive because of the breath of God—the breath that has changed us from mere mortal dust into bearers of the image and likeness of God, moving in His glorious purpose.
