Have you ever heard this phrase in Hebrew?
This phrase appears at the beginning of almost every prayer or blessing in Jewish tradition:
“Barukh Atah Adonai”—which translates word for word as, “Blessed are You, O LORD.”
At first glance, if we use a modern way of thinking, this phrase sounds strange.
How can we bless God?
Is He not the One who blesses us?
But here is its beauty:
In the Hebrew way of thinking, this sentence is not arranged like modern language.
It begins with the final result—“Barukh” (Blessed)—and then names its subject—“Atah Adonai” (You, O LORD).
This means that this blessing is not our giving something to God,
but a reverent acknowledgment that He is the source of every blessing.
It is as though we are declaring with wonder and humility:
“You are the source of every blessing, O LORD.”
So today, wherever you are, let us say this phrase together—
not only with your lips, but also with your heart:
Barukh Atah Adonai.
“You, O LORD, are the fountain of life, goodness, and everything I need.”
