Let us reflect for a moment on the following passage:
After He had said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.
— Acts 1:9
We may each have our own visual imagination of how this magnificent event took place. Today, however, I would like to invite us to look more deeply at one important element in the scene: the symbolism and function of the cloud.
The Cloud: A Curtain Between Two Realms
In the Bible, when a cloud appears in the context of the Divine presence, it has a very crucial function. The cloud is a boundary between the heavenly realm and the earthly realm.
Why is this boundary necessary? Because without that “veil,” the pure and overwhelming glory of God would cause human beings to perish. As He said:
But He said, “You cannot see My face, for no one may see Me and live.”
— Exodus 33:20
God also demonstrates this principle through His creation: look at the sun. Without the layers of the atmosphere protecting the earth, its extreme radiation and heat would destroy all life.
In the same way, God’s cloud mitigates full exposure to the glory of heaven so that we may remain safe in His presence.
If we use a modern lens, this cloud functions like a “portal” (such as those we often see in science-fiction films or Avengers)—a meeting point where two different dimensions touch.
A Challenge: “Cloud” or “Clouds”?
Here lies an intriguing secret for those of you who enjoy digging into the depths of God’s Word.
Throughout the Bible, when a cloud is mentioned in the context of God’s presence, the word is always singular. Yet there is a very specific exception. There are only three occasions on which Scripture explicitly uses the plural form: “clouds.”
