1. The Root of Election: Before the World Knew Us
Romans 9:11 plainly states that God’s election of His people took place even before we were born and before we had done anything—good or evil. This is the doctrine of Sovereign Election.
Does this mean that God is unjust? Certainly not! (Romans 9:14–16). If God gave pure “justice,” then all of us would deserve punishment. Yet He chose to give mercy. Our salvation is not driven by our desire or effort (“not based on works”), but purely by His calling and mercy.
2. The “Beggar’s” Prayer: The Only Worthy Response
If salvation is entirely God’s prerogative, then our most fitting posture of heart is like the tax collector in Luke 18:13. This is the prayer of a self-aware “spiritual beggar”:
“God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
We pray for mercy not because we feel worthy, but because we know that without His grace we have no hope.
Salvation is a gift—grace—for those who have a heart of fear and trembling: a deep awe and reverence for His holiness.
3. Malachi 3:16–18: Evidence of a Transformation
Then how do we know that someone belongs to Him?
Malachi 3:16–18 gives us a beautiful picture of the “Book of Remembrance.”
God records all those who fear Him. This record is not merely a list of names, but evidence that His grace is truly at work. His chosen people will display a different posture of heart: they honor His name and serve Him. This behavior is not a condition for being chosen, but evidence that they have become His “treasured possession” (Segullah).
So let our lives become a testimony that we are people who have received His mercy, live with holy reverence, and serve Him with gratitude.
