The book begins with a terrifying picture:
The King sends His own army to destroy His rebellious people.
But here is the surprise:
What kind of King sends an army to punish, yet weeps over His people and pleads with them to return to Him?
This is the hidden treasure of the book of Joel:
God’s judgment is not meant to destroy His people, but to awaken them.
Even when He permits destruction to come, it is not because of cruelty, but because of chesed (חֶסֶד)—faithful love within a covenant that disciplines with a purpose, not punishment born of anger.
Yet what is even more moving:
God not only stops the judgment—He even replaces the years lost to locusts, drought, and suffering.
And notice this beautiful Hebrew word:
“Shilamti” (שִׁלַּמְתִּי) comes from the root shalam—which is related to shalom. It does not merely mean “to repay.” It means: to make complete, to restore, and to bring peace.
This is not merely justice—this is mercy that surpasses justice.
He gives what we deserve through judgment…
then gives more than we deserve through grace.
Only a God like YHWH can be:
- Just without losing love,
- Punishing without losing hope,
- And forgiving with open hands, not merely a soft heart.
Today’s Reflection
Are you experiencing destruction, a dry season, or loss?
Remember:
God does not stop with judgment.
He is awakening us, not casting us away.
And when we return to Him,
He does not only forgive…
He restores the years that were lost.
